An exquisite set of duets between the haunting voice of Grazyna Auguscik and the brilliant pianist Bogdan Holownia on her own GMA label. I always listen to this when I’m in a relaxed mood, and things are quiet around the home. I love the way this was recorded; it has a very intimate and airy echo (like alot of the early ECM recordings that are now classics). I first got into Grazyna with her fantastic “Don’t Let Me Go” cd, also on her GMA label. Grazyna does not waste a single note in her singing, and her very original style always brings surprises. Her versions (with Ho- lownia) of “Willow Weep For Me” and the Thelonious Monk classic “Well, You Needn’t” on “Pastels” are magnificent, and very, very original. Other highlights include “Caravan”, “He Was Too Good To Me”, and “Love For Sale” all beautifully performed and recorded. The entire recording is a gorgeous and intimate work of art that always rewards. If you’ve never heard of this brilliant singer and performer, check this out. I have all of her releases and love them all. She has one of the most hauntingly beautuful voices and original styles I’ve ever heard. You cannot go wrong with “Pastels”. It’s a sophisticated, cool, and beautiful work of art.
